A Dallas real estate developer is petitioning the City Plan Commission to allow two multifamily buildings he owns near Bishop Arts to continue operating as short-term rentals despite a pending legal matter that could ban such activity in residential neighborhoods. As of April 27th, 2022, Airbnb dominated the Dallas STR market at 80% or 5,299 listings. Factoring in other platforms, the total number of STRs in Dallas exceeds 6,000 today, a 53% per year growth or 568% increase since 2016. Dallas residents are continuing their fight against STRs as the solution is simple: STRs are commercial hotels (as defined by the city and the state) and therefore should not be allowed to operate in residential areas. To address the issue, the city has established a deeply flawed STR task force, in which the vast majority of members are pro-STR, including a paid Airbnb lobbyist from outside the city.
